Moor Trees creates and expands native broadleaf woodlands on Dartmoor, forming a mosaic of restored habitats through natural regeneration of native species, and is helping to improve connectivity of habitats through the planting of trees.
We grow our own trees in our two Community Tree Nurseries using locally sourced seed from Dartmoor and surrounding areas.
Since 2000 Moor Trees has planted over 195,000 trees and supported the creation of more than 175 woodlands and hedgerows.
We currently provide the opportunity to over 275 volunteers each year to reconnect to nature and enhance their wellbeing.
At the heart of our mission lies a powerful purpose: connecting communities, improving biodiversity and combating climate change – the most urgent challenges of our time.
Our vision is to restore Dartmoor’s woodlands by encouraging the natural regeneration of native species that is already taking place in some areas, and helping to establish a network of community woodlands, planting trees where necessary.
By 2050, we hope to see a wilder, more natural Dartmoor, with restored moorland habitats and semi-natural grazing managed by local farmers and communities.
We also believe that a wilder Dartmoor will be good for the local economy, improving existing livelihoods as well as creating new opportunities.
We want to bring to life the story of how people and communities connected with the historical woodland, and enable them to re-engage with trees and natural environments.
Volunteers, community groups and local businesses, support our mission to enhance the forest heritage and restore natural and native character woodland, by: advocating native forest re-creation, bringing attention to the loss of the natural environment and working with others to restore that heritage. Designing, planning and creating high quality woodlands, and associated habitats, for individuals and communities, using our extensive team of volunteers. Collecting local-provenance seeds to grow in our community tree nurseries.
